How to encourage children to read the bible

Reading bible

“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6). This is a command. Training our children is not optional. The Bible remains true and should be displayed in our ever-so-changing routines. My husband and I love seeing how we can insert biblical truth to our children throughout the day. We are passionate about our children knowing who God is and how we can understand him through the people and things he has made. In order for our children to understand truth at a young age, there are a few things we do to help ensure the gospel is present in our home.

We do not own a TV in our home

We understand that our culture is consumed by technology. It is hard to get rid of technology fully, but the use of a TV can be a hindrance to growth in the home. Television can often be a distraction for children at a young age and that’s often why parents get a TV to distract themselves and children from reality. I am not saying we are perfect by no means. We still use our computer for our children to watch a show, and they love it. On Tuesday and Friday, we allow our children to watch a show. They are eager to watch their show. I also think that since a TV is always visible to a child, it presents a greater desire to turn it on. A computer can be tucked away until it’s time to watch a show and it helps them to place their attention on other books or toys around them or a desire to communicate with each other. We recognize that without a TV present our children talk to us and their siblings more.

Reading a chapter of the Bible during dinner time

This has been so rewarding for us as a family. Our children ask us to read the bible so its not something they are huffing and puffing about all through dinner. Since we have established this habit of reading the bible during dinner it is a part of our routine. There are some chapters in the bible that are really long, so we break it up into parts. After we read the bible, we ask them “do you have a takeaway?”. This allows them to say what they heard and create a habit of listening to learn instead of listening to entertain themselves. When I first wrote this blog our kids were 3, 2, and 1. Since then we have added another baby to our family and our children have grown much. At first, they would need help giving their takeaway but now we have seen much growth for our now 6 and 4 year olds as they draw out from the bible a takeaway on their own. Our 3 year old and almost one year old will need help and that is the joy we can have as we train up our children in the way they should go. The kids usually will need help with their takeaway since our children are ages 3, 2 and 1.

Purchase an audio bible for each child

We purchased audio bibles for our children in hopes of them learning more about the bible and for them to listen to them while they go to sleep. There’s nothing like scripture covering you as you rest. Our children love to listen to theirs and tell us what they learned. Our oldest daughter will listen to a bible story on repeat so she can say it verbatim. Click the link below to see which one we purchased for our children: audio bible.

Allow your child to see you read the bible in your free time

Allow your children to see you read the bible in your free time- I would love for our children to see my husband and I reading the bible in our free time. Children watch your habits and will pick up some of your habits as they grow. This is important for them to prioritize time to read the bible on their own. We must model what this looks like for them first.

Find rich bible books

We should be intentional to find books that point to Christ. There are many great authors who are intentional in pointing out bible truth as our children learn ABC’s, numbers, etc. Our intentionality to find these books and read them to our children will produce much growth in our children’s development. Check out some of our favorite books on my blog page,

I pray these tips are helpful to all who desire to train their children in godliness. If you’re reading this and that is not your desire, I pray you would see the importance in having a relationship with God so that your life and parenting may be full of his love, grace and mercy.

DIY Laundry detergent

DIY Laundry Detergent In our household Laundry is a must every single day. One load a day keeps the laundry away. We are a family of six and I like to be prepared just in case we are out of our favorite Rustic Strength Laundry detergent; would I know a simple recipe to keep our clothes clean? As I teach my children, I am reminded to always consider myself as a student as well, so that I can continue to have a mindset to learn. This DIY laundry detergent is a simple way to keep clothes clean and fresh.   2 cups Soap flakes: I prepare my own soap flakes by using Dr. Bronners castile bar soap and using my food processor to shred the bar into pieces. You can also purchase the soap flakes that are already prepared to use. 1 cup Washing soda: There are many brands, but I have used this one and it works well. This product is used to brighten the clothes and remove stains. 1 cup Borax: Eliminates odors, brightens clothes, softens hard water.  Optional: 4 drops essential oil Use 2-3 tablespoons of this detergent per load depending on the size of load and how soiled the clothes are. I make a large batch of this detergent since we are a bigger family. Fabric Softener: 1-2 tablespoons of 30-45% vinegar. We have hard water, so the vinegar combined with the other products really helps to remove odor and stains.
